Today’s Minute Cryptic Answer Hints [June 20th, 2026]

Puzzle: To-Do: firstly, find recipe; secondly, make scones; thirdly, feast lustily (6)
Hint 1
πŸ’‘ Reveal Hint
The definition is the very first word: “To-Do”. While typically referring to a list of tasks, here it is used as a noun meaning a commotion, fuss, or noisy fight (as in, “they made quite a to-do about it”). You are looking for a 6-letter word.
Hint 2
πŸ’‘ Reveal Hint
This clue uses a brilliant, multi-step positional indicator. The words “firstly”, “secondly”, and “thirdly” are instructions telling you exactly which letters to extract from the word pairs that immediately follow them. Start by taking the “first” letters of the words “find recipe”. This gives you F and R.
Hint 3
πŸ’‘ Reveal Hint
Now simply continue that exact same pattern! Take the “second” letters of “make scones” (mAke sCones), and finally, take the “third” letters of “feast lustily”. Put all six extracted letters together in order!

Puzzle: Skinning cats and dogs? (7)
Hint 1
πŸ’‘ Reveal Hint
The phrase “cats and dogs?” is a playful reference to a popular weather idiom. When it is “raining cats and dogs,” what 7-letter word is often used to describe that kind of heavy, forceful rain?
Hint 2
πŸ’‘ Reveal Hint
The first word, “Skinning”, provides the other half of the puzzle. Think of a 4-letter word for the skin, hide, or fur of an animal. To remove this skin from a hunted animal is known as what action?
Hint 3
πŸ’‘ Reveal Hint
This clue is a classic Double Definition. There is no anagram or wordplay container here; instead, the setter has given you two completely different dictionary definitions for the exact same 7-letter word and combined them to create a deceptive sentence.

A Beginner’s Guide to Minute Cryptic

Read Guide

If you have ever looked at a cryptic crossword and thought it looked like a foreign language, you are in the right place. Minute Cryptic is a daily game designed to pull back the curtain on these puzzles. Instead of overwhelming you with a full grid, we give you just one clue a day, complete with video walkthroughs and tiered hints to help you learn the logic at your own pace.

What is a Cryptic Clue?

In a normal crossword, the clue is just a definition. In a cryptic, the clue is a double-agent. Every single clue contains two hidden parts that lead to the same answer:

  • The Definition: A direct synonym for the answer (usually found at the very start or the very end of the clue).
  • The Wordplay: A “recipe” that tells you how to build the word using letter tricks.

The Secret Ingredients

To solve the wordplay, you need to identify two things: the Fodder (the letters you are working with) and the Indicator ( the instruction telling you what to do with those lettersβ€”like “mix them up” or “flip them”).

The trickiest part is the Surface. This is the “story” the clue seems to tell at first glance. It is designed to distract you! To solve, you must ignore the story and look at the individual words as puzzle pieces.

How to Learn (The Courses)

We recommend starting with our interactive courses to practice these patterns in real-time:

  • Course 1: Letterplay – Learn how to manipulate actual letters (Anagrams, Reversals, Hiddens).
  • Course 2: Wordplay – Learn how to swap words for symbols and synonyms (Substitutions, Containers, Homophones).

Common Solving Tricks

Once you start spotting these “indicators,” the clues become much easier to crack:

Letterplay Techniques:

  • Anagrams: Mixing up letters (Indicator: “broken,” “wild,” “crazy”).
  • Selectors: Taking only certain letters (Indicator: “first of,” “heart of”).
  • Hiddens: The answer is literally hiding inside the phrase.
  • Reversals: Reading a word backward (Indicator: “returning,” “flipped”).

Wordplay Techniques:

  • Substitutions (Synonyms & Symbols): Swapping a word for its short version (e.g., “Doctor” becomes “DR”).
  • Containers: Putting one word inside another (Indicator: “clutched by,” “in”).
  • Deletions: Dropping a letter (Indicator: “limitless,” “incomplete”).
  • Homophones: Words that sound the same but are spelled differently (Indicator: “we hear”).
